What is Mindfulness?
Weâve all heard about the mental, emotional, and physical benefits of meditation. Mindfulness is a form of meditation that helps us slow down and become more aware of whatâs going on within and around us. At work and in daily life, we can experience reduced stress, better concentration, increased empathy and compassion, and improved interpersonal communications.
Mindfulness is about opening up to our reality in the present moment. The practice is simple, yet its effects can be profound: We focus on our breath as an anchor, and in doing so, we develop an increased awareness of our thoughts and emotions as they arise and subside.
Mainly, what is required is an open curiosity to explore the experience for yourself. Like a swimming pool with varying depths, itâs possible to feel the benefits of mindfulness even by dipping your toes in the water – and perhaps taking a step or two into the shallow end of the pool.
Three Consecutive Mindful Meditation Classes:
1. Saturday, March 9
Topic: Introduction to Mindfulness
2. Saturday, March 16
Topic: Non-judgmental Awareness
3. Saturday, March 23
Topic: Open-hearted Awareness
Each class will be a 75-minute session, and will meet at the 50 Regent Observatory from 10:30 to 11:45 am. You will learn the basic concepts and practice of mindfulness. We sit on chairs, arranged in a circle, and experience both sitting and walking meditation. This series will introduce a new practice to your way of life, and youâre strongly encouraged to attend all three classes.
Cost for the series of three classes is $20. Please pay at the time of the class by cash or check.
